Khayr al-Din al-Tunisi and Islamic Reformism as a Synthesis between the West and the Islamic Tradition

Muslim countries have experienced great change and transformation during the 19th 20th centuries as a result of their encounters with West. Islamic reformism might be considered discourse developed to face diverse challenges posed by Western modernity. Khayr al-Din al-Tunisi (1810–1890) was statesman intellectual century who elaborated an original approach question reformism. His major work, The Surest Path Knowledge Concerning Conditions Countries (Aqwam al-Masalik fi Ma’rifat Ahwal al-Mamalik), represents important contribution debates on Islam, modernism This study is based this work other primary secondary sources (books articles) regarding his approach. Using qualitative methods analysis (contextualization descriptive analysis), aimed scrutinize how offered balanced reformist vision synthesis between Westernism tradition. Rather than purely imitating West, emphasized need for better understanding institutions basis Islam.
